The end of a wanton noodle stall

I recently discovered Hokkien Wanton Noodle, a stall at Block 153A Serangoon North Avenue 1 selling delicious wanton noodles at affordable prices.

The couple, Mr and Mdm Toh, makes the noodles in a way that reminds me of the noodles I ate as a kid in the 1990s. I also love their fried dumplings (炸水饺, zha shui jiao), which are fried on the spot.

Alas, all good things must come to an end. To my utter dismay, I found out the couple is retiring on Sunday, 30 October, after 36 years running the stall.

I asked Mdm Toh if they had any successors. “Don’t have, don’t have,” she said in Mandarin.

I am gutted. At the same time, I feel they deserve a good retirement.

I will be heading there this Sunday to taste their wanton noodles for the last time.
